Vans Surf supports Queer community with Breaking Waves
Dylan Graves of Vans explores the plight of LGBTQ+ people within the surfing community!
Vans, an original action sports brand and icon of creative expression, is proud to present Breaking Waves: Queer Surf, the latest project from Vans professional surfers and Weird Waves host Dylan Graves. In this short film, Dylan and producer Dave Malcolm explore the stereotypical male perceptions that often occur within surf culture as they seek to learn more about the experience of the LGBTQ+ community and understand how all surfers can become more united with one another.
With Breaking Waves, Vans and Dylan shed light on social issues and topics that are often overlooked and radicalized within surfing. In this episode, Dylan gets in touch with Queer Surf, a San Francisco organization dedicated to creating a safe space where marginalized people can express themselves and truly be themselves, on the beach as well as in the water.
“The dialogues we’ve opened up represent new things for surfing,” Dylan said about the launch of Breaking Waves. “The only way to grow and learn is to talk about it. We wanted to discuss with these groups how they feel and how we can support their messages. They have the same right to be on the beach as anyone else – it sounds so simple, and when you hear it out loud, you think “sure, why wouldn’t they?” But we want to highlight that these issues are still a sore spot within surf culture, and that’s why we’re trying to figure out how we can reshape it.”
